You must have a permit to keep more than 2 dogs on a property in the Gisborne district.
The occupier of a property in an urban area must not keep more than 2 dogs over the age of 3 months, other than a working dog, on the property for more than 30 consecutive days without a permit.
A permit is required even if the dogs at the same property are owned by different people.
An application for a permit to keep the dogs on the property must be submitted within 30 days of the dogs first being kept on the property.
Approval requirements
- You will need the consent of all the neighbours who adjoin your property.
- If you're renting or leasing the property, you need consent from your property owner.
If you don't get all your neighbours’ signatures, you can't apply for a permit. If a neighbour refuses consent for irrelevant reasons, please tell us if this is the case.
The permit is issued subject to standard conditions. If you don't meet the conditions we may withdraw your permit.
Once you have the permit, you only need to apply for a new permit if you change your address.
