H2O Planting and fish passage

28 May

GDC’s Haumanu Tū Ora/Freshwater Improvement Fund (H2O) team got their planting season off to an awesome start at a site near Campion College recently.

In partnership with Campion College, Enviroschools, Mahaki Mahinga Kai and Te Ngahuru Tikotikoiere, around 1400 plants were planted in the whenua adjacent to the kura, and a further 15,000 wetland plants will be planted in the wetland esplanade next to the river by Mahaki Mahinga Kai before the end of May.

Here’s a pic of the team doing the planting mahi.

Other work done under the H20 work programme earlier this year was the remediation of four fish barriers on the Kopuawhakapata, Calders and Waikirikiri streams.

The operation was made possible with the help of Whaia Titirangi, the Wastewater Treatment Team and ATS environmental. They also received valuable help from the stormwater team, Environmental monitoring team and Health and Safety team.

The H2O team is looking forward to remediating a few more barriers around the region during the next summer season. You will be able to see the different barriers that were remediated in their upcoming webpage.

Remediation of those barriers will allow native fish species (Inanga, Tuna..) to migrate upstream to reproduce. Many native fish species are great climbers, this is why mussel rope can be used to remediate some barriers.
