Demand for poplar and willow poles from Council’s Waerenga-o-kuri nursery regularly exceeds supply. This means that some people who want poles often miss out.
For many years we have run an order system where orders are placed ahead of pole planting season. Once an order was confirmed, stock was put aside and held for collection when customers were ready.
Unfortunately over the last few winters there have been many instances of confirmed orders not being collected. Often by the time we are informed that the poles are no longer required, they have started growing in the soak bays and the winter planting window is closed. These poles are then unable to be allocated to other people, and they end up on the burn heap.
From next winter a new system of “first in, first served” will be in place to ensure that we no longer have to sustain these losses. We will welcome orders from everyone who wishes to purchase poles, however stock will not be held. Collection at the earliest opportunity will be the only way to secure the poles you require. Once the nursery is sold out, any un-filled orders will be cancelled.
The pole order form is available on the GDC website Order-Form-Poplar-Willow-Poles-and-Tree-Sleeves-2023.pdf (gdc.govt.nz). Orders can be placed from now if required to indicate the numbers and species required. We will advise customers who have placed orders when the nursery will be open for collection.
