2 years on from Cyclone Gabrielle

14 February 2025

Mayor Rehette Stoltz reflects on 2 years since Cyclone Gabrielle changed our region forever.

While the journey hasn’t been easy, I want to acknowledge the incredible progress we’ve made together.

Thanks to the dedication of our Council, iwi, community partners, and the significant investment from Government, we’ve been able to tackle some of the biggest challenges head-on.

We’ve repaired many roads and bridges, enabled residents in high risk areas to relocate to safe homes, and removed over 505,000m³ of large woody debris.

Work continues on these projects as well as major projects like a resilient new route for Tiniroto Road and stronger flood protection for our most vulnerable communities.

This recovery is about more than just rebuilding — it’s about creating a safer, stronger Tairāwhiti for the future.

The financial commitment from both Government and Council has been substantial and we are making sure every dollar counts
towards a more resilient region.

Recovery takes time, but we’ve made incredible progress, and we’re not slowing down.

If you need support or have any questions, our recovery office is here to help — just reach out to recovery@gdc.govt.nz.

Thank you for your patience, resilience, and belief in Tairāwhiti’s future.
