Conservation Week 2024 (Te Wiki Tiaki Ao Tūroa) - taking action for nature!
This year’s Conservation Week was an awesome celebration of our community’s passion for the Taiao! Across our district, a diverse range of events showcased the amazing work of local kaitiaki who are making a conscious effort to be there for our Taiao. From beach cleanups and presentations, to observing some pretty awesome flora and fauna.
Each event highlighted the incredible efforts of individuals and groups in the Tairawhiti who are driving positive change. We honoured the mahi of our eco-warriors, who are inspiring others to join the conservation whānau.
Building on this momentum, Council biodiversity staff organised additional initiatives to promote conservation and opportunities for other staff and the public to get in amongst it. Our two Waingake Trapping Days gave wider GDC staff a unique opportunity to explore the Waingake Ngahere Ora project and witness the remarkable work of the Ngahere Ora team, who tirelessly care for a vast area of our environment.
Meanwhile, Jess Terekia from Haumanu Tū Ora (H20) team reinforced the importance of environmental stewardship with Mangatuna School kids, solidifying their existing commitment to protecting our natural world and inspiring them to continue making a positive impact.
GDC Biosecurity Officer Glenn Brown's biosecurity presentation at the library highlighted the importance of protecting our region from invasive species. Our beach cleanup, that was expertly organized by Chloe Howard-Llyod from the solid waste team, which helped bring staff together to make a tangible impact on our coastal environment. It was a fantastic display of teamwork and commitment to reducing waste and preserving our beautiful beaches.
In a special event, we partnered with Malcolm Rutherford from QEII and Dame Anne Salmond for what was titled 'Walk with a Botanist' at the stunning Waikereru 1769 gardens. This unique experience allowed attendees to explore and learn about our native and endangered flora alongside some pretty passionate people.
The conservation journey doesn't stop here. Join us at the upcoming A&P Show to continue the conversation and learn more about our conservation efforts. We can't wait to share our passion for the environment with you and explore ways to work together towards a more sustainable future.
These events demonstrate our commitment at GDC to preserving our natural heritage and promoting cultural understanding. We look forward to continuing this important work together!
