Our walking and cycling networks consist of footpaths, shared paths, footbridges, bike lanes, mountain biking, boardwalks and cycleways. We aim to improve walking and cycling opportunities for the whole community.
They support and encourage our community to get outside and enjoy moving around the city easily and safely to improve health, economic and social outcomes. We are working on a plan to encourage different choices on how we travel, bringing together several strategies, projects and initiatives.
Other related projects include speed reductions near schools and in townships, Streets for People, and a road safety campaign around safer walking and cycling.
The only project to support this in the next 3 years is extending the Taruheru River shared path from Mitre10 to the Botanical Gardens as outlined in our Three Year Plan 2024-2027.
The first stage of this path is now complete, with a shared path following the Taruheru River between Grey and Derby Streets (behind Mitre10).
We have allocated $3.3 million in our Three Year Plan to continue the walkway from Mitre10 to the Botanical Gardens - we have applied for $0.75m of this from New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi. As the Government Policy Statement has prioritised recovery and resilience projects, it is unlikely they will fund this work. We will know by September 2024.
