Waipaoa and Motu bridge repairs update

The NZ Transport Agency has identified some issues with the Waipaoa Bridge on State Highway 2 that have required us to re-prioritise the bridgework programme in the region.

We have to undertake some urgent repairs to the Waipaoa Bridge on SH2 just before the roundabout heading south of Gisborne. Priority has been given to repairing and opening the Waipaoa Bridge to 2-lanes.

We are diverting resources from the Motu Bridge project. As a result, the works to Motu Bridge will now take longer than the original completion date. The expected completion date is now towards the end of July, but this is dependent on the work at Waipaoa Bridge being completed on time.

Consequently the opening of Gisborne to Opotiki to 50Max will be delayed until the Motu Bridge works are completed. While this is not desirable from NZTA’s perspective, the work at Waipaoa is a priority.

For the time being work at the Motu Bridge will continue to prepare for the jacking of the deck.

NZTA is grateful for the patience and understanding of the public and local industry while we get this important work done.
