The community is asked to urgently conserve water following the discovery of a leak in the main water supply pipeline this morning.
For the very latest updates
Update 2 @ 3pm 14 February:
Contractors are onsite at Makaraka preparing to dig. They needed to identify all the underground services before they could begin to dig.
We won’t know the cause of the leak until they reach the pipe.
Water is still available to all households and commercial properties in the city, but drawing from reservoir storage which have enough for approximately 24 hours.
We urge people to stop using water outdoors for non-essential use.
We don’t know how long the restriction will be in effect until we know what’s required to fix the leak.
We’ll be able to update the community with more information after 4pm.
Update 1 @ 12.30pm: The leak has put immediate pressure on the city’s reservoirs and without restrictions, we will not have enough water to meet Gisborne’s current demand.
This means a total ban on all outdoor water use - no washing your car, watering your lawn or garden and no filling swimming pools.
Industrial water users need to put their water shortage contingency plans in place immediately.
Our staff and contractors are onsite now investigating the cause and fixes. We will continue to update the public as more information becomes available.
