Sewer overflow valve opened
*Update - Monday 22 June, the emergency scour was closed at 10.30am this morning and the discharge has stopped.
Saturday 20 June 5am - The city wastewater system has flooded due to heavy rain.
To prevent sewage overflowing back into homes and onto the road, the emergency sewer valve at the Gladstone Road Bridge was opened at around 5am.
The discharge is diluted, but contact with the waterways may be a risk to health.
We've notified the Medical Officer of Health, water user and sports groups.
Temporary warning signs will be in place at recreation sites.
We advise no swimming, fishing or shellfish gathering in the river or beach until at least 5 days after the valves are closed, and warning signs are removed.
We will provide an update when the discharge has stopped.
