Seasons greetings from Mayor Meng Foon
Nga mihi o enei wa hari me to koa – the best of the festive season to you all.
As 2018 rapidly comes to a close, I would like to reflect on what we’ve achieved in a very busy year for Council.
We celebrated the reopening of the HB Williams Library, which is truly a wonderful asset to our city and we were able to move our staff in to one building, Awarua, instead of being scattered across Tairawhiti in six different buildings.
The community shared with us their views on the future of Tairāwhiti and Council adopted a comprehensive Long Term Plan that includes many important projects that will benefit our people.
The government announced more than $320 million of investments in the district, aimed at unlocking regional economic growth through key infrastructure, tourism and employment projects.
We weathered two big storms over winter and supported our affected communities in the aftermath.
Significant work was achieved on our Navigate Tairāwhiti programme but we still have a way to go to complete projects in time for the Tuia 250 sester-centennial commemorations.
The Lawson Field Theatre upgrade is progressing well and ahead of schedule, while our MAR project continues with the second stage getting underway next year.
It’s been non-stop and I would like to acknowledge the councillors and staff for their work, as well as the community for supporting us to achieve their aspirations.
Now the festive season is here, I hope you all get to take some time out to relax and enjoy moments of peace with your whanau.
There are some awesome events happening around Tairāwhiti over the next month and I encourage you to make the most of these and share our special place with visiting friends and whanau.
Meng and Ying
