Road Closures for Silver Fern Rally
The Silver Fern Rally has been given approval to advertise road closures for their event in Gisborne in December.
Organisers Club Targa will require temporary road closures of Pehiri, Wharekopae, Tahora, Rakauroa, Ruakaka, Parikanapa, Taumata Roads for the one-day event.
Club Targa have held similar rally events in Gisborne in the past. The cars involved are classic 2WD cars such as Ford Escorts.
They are responsible for public liability insurance and must pay a $50k bond to cover any council damage.
Organisers have consulted with residents along the proposed routes and have support from the majority.
While the event was discussed at the Future Tairawhiti Committee, Mayor Meng Foon said there would be no cost to council or ratepayers but the level of exposure would be beneficial to the community.
The competitors and support crews will spend the night in Gisborne.
The Silver Fern Rally will be held on 1 December.
