Repairs to erosion protection structures
Contractors will carry out repairs to damaged erosion protection structures at the southern end of Wainui Beach, early next week.
Some sand excavation will be required to uncover the gabion baskets, add rocks to them and repair the wiring.
New tie-wires will also be installed at the log and rail wall near Tuahine Point.
As directed by the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement, and the Wainui Beach Erosion Management Strategy, Council will not replace old erosion protection structures but we can repair existing ones for the immediate future.
Without the necessary repairs, there’s increased risk of erosion to the sand dunes from swell events.
The repairs should take about 2 days to complete, tide and swell dependent.
