Plastic Free July underway
Plastic Free July has kicked off and there are plenty of local initiatives and events to help Tairawhiti say no to single-use plastic.
Held annually, PFJ challenges us to think about the amount of plastic packaging in our lives and make smarter choices to reduce it.
It is a global initiative with over a million people taking part worldwide.
The focus is to refuse the top 4 single use plastics – bags, bottles, straws and coffee cups.
Volunteer group Plastic Bag Free Tairawhiti is coordinating a series of events to help educate the public and raise awareness locally.
There is a documentary screening at the Dome Cinema called ‘Living the Change: Inspiring Stories for a Sustainable Future’ on July 10, with just a koha entry.
A 24-hour Bag-A-Thon event is being held at Ka pai Kaiti at Kaiti Mall on 13 – 14 July, where volunteers can come along and help sew reusable shopping bags for our community.
A beach clean-up will be held on 29 July at Waikanae Beach, with volunteers asked to meet beside the Surf Club at 1pm.
You can see further events on the Plastic Bag Free Tairawhiti Facebook page.
