Maintenance works
Most of the investment in the Tairāwhiti roading package is for maintenance activities on the region's local road network.
The aim of the projects - to unlock our region's economic potential by creating a stronger and safer transport network. The work includes surface upgrades and stronger bridges.
Freight route upgrades
Maintenance includes road surface upgrades, drainage work and replacing culverts on our region's 5 main freight routes:
Tauwhareparae, Arakihi, Hokoroa, Mata roads
Gisborne city and the Poverty Bay Flats
Waingake Road
Wharekopae, Tiniroto roads
Whatatutu and Kanakanaia roads

Bridge strengthening
Work is underway to analyse up to 15 rural bridges for strengthening to withstand increasing heavy vehicle weights.

Aerodrome Road upgrade
Full surface upgrade, widening and drainage works on Aerodrome Road to meet expected industrial growth in the area.

Rakaiatane Road upgrade
This project involves a complete surface upgrade of Rakaiatane Road, Gisborne's only access to Eastland Port. The road surface was upgraded in July 2019. The development of Kopuawhakapata Stream is remaining part of the project.

Network resilience
This project improved the standard of the network in areas affected by recurring weather events and increased vehicle movement. Work included road upgrades, culvert renewals, drainage works, heavy metalling and bridge repairs.
This project also included Gisborne city's CBD upgrade in 2019.
