Mechanical fault causes sewer discharge
A mechanical fault at the Steele Road sewer pump station caused a discharge of wastewater to the Wainui Stream. The discharge has ceased and the stream has been flushed.
Any contact with water from the Wainui Stream should be restricted for at least 5 days as the bacterial quality of the water is poor.
Water sampling at Wainui Beach at Pare Street along to Stock Route will be done Monday morning and results will be available Tuesday.
A sign is in place at Wainui Beach near the stream outlet by Pare Street.
Tuesday 31 March - water quality test results
Water quality test results confirm that Wainui Beach is safe for swimming and surfing. To confirm – Wainui Beach is not affected by the wastewater discharge.
Wainui Stream is always at an unacceptable water quality level, therefore we recommend that people don’t gather watercress or catch eels.
