Juken decision release

Juken New Zealand Limited has been fined $152,000 for discharging slash, logging debris, waste logging material and sediment onto land from where it then entered various tributaries of the Mangapoike River.

The Court’s decision was released yesterday, Wednesday 11 December.

The offending occurred at Waituna Forest during rainfall events in June 2018.  Waituna Forest is 30 kilometres southwest of Gisborne.

Council brought this prosecution following the investigation of compliance issues at a number of forests after the June 2018 rain events.

Gisborne District Council’s Director of Environmental Services and Protection, Helen Montgomery says that the Court’s sentencing decision in this case sends a strong message to the forestry industry about the importance of managing environmental risks.
