Isaac Hughes elected into Council
Isaac Hughes has been elected into Council in the Gisborne Ward by-election.
The final result shows Mr Hughes won by a margin of 1314 votes.
The next highest ranking candidates were Nick Tupara and Athena Emmerson respectively.
A total of 7994 people voted in the by-election.
Mr Hughes was raised in Ruatorea, Waipiro Bay and Tokomaru Bay and now lives in Gisborne.
He is a former chair of the Gisborne District Youth Council and a designated chartered accountant.
“I’m passionate about youth engagement and retention in the Tairāwhiti region. I’m also motivated to rejuvenate our city centre,” Mr Hughes said.
“I have been a rate payer in Gisborne for the last five years and plan to be for the rest of my life. As such, there is a vested interest that our money is spent wisely and efficiently. My core principles as Council will be transparency, efficiency and sustainability.”
Aged 27, he will be the youngest ever elected member of the Gisborne District Council.
