Gisborne farms win environmental awards
2 Gisborne farms were among the winners at the 2013 East Coast Ballance Farm Environment Awards presented at a ceremony in Napier on Thursday.
Graeme Williams and Derry Stovell, from Mangaroa Station, Tokomaru Bay, won the East Coast Farming For The Future Award, sponsored by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and Gisborne District Council. They also won the Massey University Discovery Award.
The PGG Wrightson Land & Life Award was awarded to William and Nancie Barclay, of Tahora Station, Te Karaka.
The annual awards are given to the best examples of profitable farming married to long-term environmental and economic sustainability.
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Chairman Fenton Wilson presented the awards, using his cellphone to relay a congratulatory voicemail message from Gisborne Mayor Meng Foon to the guests.
“These farmers are setting a great example in what you can achieve on your farm environments which benefits the health of their families, workers and stock, and has benefits for our wider environment,” said Mr Wilson.
