Gigatown Competition

Gigatown was the Chorus run competition to be the most connected, gig-savvy town in the southern hemisphere.  Dunedin was announced as New Zealand's first Gigatown in November 2014.

Well done Gisborne - what an amazing community effort to get us to the finals and in a very close second place.

Our Gig Plan for Success

The judges voted our Gig Plan for Success and video as No.1

We did it - we got to the finals!

Gisborne beat 45 other towns to be in the finals with 4 South Island centres - Wanaka, Dunedin, Timaru and Nelson.

Winning Gigatown gives access to broadband speeds of one-gigabit per second (1Gbps)  up to 100 times faster than standard internet connection.

The contest, organised by network company Chorus, ran throughout New Zealand - one town winning the fastest internet speeds. All homes in the winning town are likely to be offered a fibre optic broadband connection for the same price that they would pay for an entry level connection.

The competition launched Labour weekend 2013.  Chorus took representatives from the 5 finalist towns to Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA to inspire their own community.
