Easter Sunday shop trading has green light
Expect to see more shops open over the Easter period with Council giving the green light to Easter Sunday shop trading.
The new policy was adopted earlier this month, in response to a legislation change in 2016.
Previously Easter Sunday shop trading was controlled by central government with only certain retailers allowed to legally trade. The change in the Shop Trading Hours Amendment Act 2016 has handed that decision to local councils. Gisborne joins 30-plus others from around the country who have provided for further trading on Easter Sunday.
The change follows public consultation and allows local businesses to make their own decision on opening on Easter Sunday.
“Those business which do open will be taking advantage of the tourists who will be in town, as well as servicing our wider community,” says Mayor Meng Foon.
“But the law change gives businesses and staff the choice.”
