Dash to complete loading log ship
Aratu Forests have received special dispensation from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment to continue to load the ship the Matakana Island which is currently in Port and due to leave Saturday at the latest.
Chief executive Ian Brown says the company is working hard to complete the cartage from its Dunstan Road base at Matawhero to the Port by mid-morning on Friday.
To ensure compliance, this will be monitored by Tairawhiti Civil Defence and Emergency Group Controller Dave Wilson through the emergency powers given to him.
“We are going as fast as we can to get it done,” said Mr Brown. On Tuesday 12 trucks were tasked with running a circuit between the Port and Matawhero. As soon as the drivers finish their shifts they head home to isolate. “We had hoped to have loading finished before the deadline but got caught on the hop a bit due to swells in the Port,” said Mr Brown. “We had a conversation with the Ministry of Business and Innovation and they gave us permission to finish the vessel off.”
The vessel is three-quarters filled now and will sail for South Korea with a full 30,000-tonne load.
