Compliance checks at summer campgrounds

freedom camping

Our enforcement staff will be visiting summer campgrounds throughout the holiday season to ensure compliance with camping bylaws.

There will be regular patrols of campsites at Turihaua and Pouawa beach at least twice a week. Staff will be checking for permits and compliance with our camping rules. We encourage people to look after the environment and keep our beaches safe for everyone to enjoy. Anyone found without a permit or to be breaching freedom camping rules will need to comply or asked to move on

Community caretakers will be monitoring camping sites further up the coast.

Campers are reminded to take their rubbish to the signposted collection points and not leave rubbish bags on the roadside.

Also those camping with dogs need to have control over their dogs at all times.

Any complaints about noisy campers or sanitation issues will be directed to our environmental health team and complaints about aggressive camping behaviour will be directed to Police.

Where you can buy a permit or find additional information on summer camping.
