Recognition for John Clarke
Tairawhiti Civil Defence Emergency Management group controller John Clarke has received national recognition for his contribution to the organisation.
At an awards dinner in Auckland, Mr Clarke was presented with a silver award by Minister for CDEM Kris Faafoi, acknowledging his contribution dating back 35 years.
John was the local controller for the Waikohu Council from 1983-1989. He was involved with the civil defence response to Cyclone Bola in 1988 and in the aftermath advocated on behalf of the Waikohu area for resources to assist recovery.
From 1989 to 2001, Mr Clarke was the mayor of Gisborne following his term he became group recovery manager and alternate group controller.
He is still involved with CDEM in these positions today, acting as controller for a number of events including the Te Araroa earthquake in 2015 and Kaikoura earthquake in 2016.
John has been recovery manager for 3 significant flood events and the Gisborne earthquake in 2007.
CDEM says his common sense and knowledge of the district have made him an invaluable team member.
