Bonfires for Guy Fawkes allowed at Midway Beach
Guy Fawkes night (5 November) falls on a Monday night this year. Council as the Rural Fire Authority has decided to allow beach bonfires on Saturday 3, Sunday 4 and Monday 5 November 2012.
These fires are only allowed at Midway Beach between the Midway Surf Life Saving Club building and the ‘Green Light’.
Fires can only be lit on the beach below the high tide mark, well away from any vegetation. They should only be lit if the wind conditions do not cause any problems with flying embers into the vegetation.
All fires should be extinguished prior to you leaving the area.
Rural Fire Officers will be on duty for the 3 nights, and will take action if any fire endangers any vegetation, or other property.
A restricted fire season is in place in Gisborne city, rural urban areas, other urban fire districts and the district's beaches all year round. Fire permits are required for all fires including open rubbish fires, incinerators, hangi’s and umu’s before you light up. The only exception is gas barbecues and gas cookers.
Fire permits can be applied for online, phone or visit Customer Service in Fitzherbert Street or Te Puia Springs. Permits take 3 days to process and are free of charge.
